Growth and Relocation

As the community expanded, the temple underwent several significant moves to accommodate its growing mission:

  • 1974: The temple moved to a larger facility on Rosalie Street in downtown Houston. It was here that the first Deities, Sri Sri Nitai Chandra and Sri Sri Chaitanya Chandra (Gaura Nitai), were installed.

  • 1979: A second set of smaller Gaura Nitai Deities, Sri Sri Nitai Chandra and Sri Sri Gaura Chandra, were installed.

  • 1984: Reaching a major milestone, the community moved to its present location on West 34th Street. The site, formerly an old church, was purchased to serve as a permanent home for the increasing congregation.

Expansion and Installation

Following the 1984 move, devotees began extensive renovations. Once the temple was ready in 1986, the presiding Deities, Sri Sri Radha Nila-Madhava, were installed. The spiritual family continued to grow with subsequent installations:

  • 1989: Sri Sri Giriraj Govardhan was installed.

  • 1992: Sri Sri Radha Giridhari arrived at the Houston temple.

Modern Developments

In 1996, the Gauranga Hall was constructed. This cultural center and gathering facility can host up to 500 members during festivals and community functions.

To further serve the spiritual needs of the Houston community, an ambitious project was launched to build a world-class sanctuary. In 2014, Sri Sri Radha Nila-Madhava and all the Deities moved into their new, state-of-the-art temple, featuring glorious real marble and a custom-made teakwood altar.

OUR FOUNDER ACHARYA

Who is Srila Prabhupada?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896–1977), founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was an extraordinary spiritual teacher who dedicated his life to sharing Krishna consciousness. Born Abhay Charan De in Calcutta, he became a disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura in a disciplic succession tracing back to Lord Krishna Himself. At the advanced age of 69 (in 1965), obeying his spiritual master’s order, Srila Prabhupada journeyed alone from India to New York with modest means: a trunk of books, $7 in change, and unshakeable faith that the holy name of Krishna would transform hearts. In the following years, he founded ISKCON in 1966 and, despite his age, circled the globe umpteen times between 1966 and 1977, lecturing across six continents, opening over 100 temples, and inspiring thousands of devotees worldwide. He was warmly received by the public, clergy, and media wherever he traveled. As both a profound scholar and consummate practitioner, Srila Prabhupada authored over forty volumes of authoritative translations and commentaries on Vedic classics, including the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Chaitanya Charitamrita, faithfully conveying the scriptures’ natural meanings on essential topics such as the purpose of human life, the nature of the soul, consciousness, and God, without any speculative interpretations. Though he departed this world in 1977, Srila Prabhupada lives eternally through his teachings, books, recordings, and the countless lives he touched, continuing to guide humanity toward genuine peace and spiritual fulfillment.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

What is ISKCON’s mission?

Rooted in the ancient Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of India—part of the broader Vaishnava branch of Hinduism—ISKCON follows the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534), who emphasized ecstatic loving devotion (bhakti-yoga) to Lord Krishna or God, as the supreme path to spiritual realization. Srila Prabhupada established ISKCON to fulfill his spiritual master’s instruction to spread Krishna consciousness worldwide, bringing the timeless Vedic wisdom that is focused on the soul’s eternal relationship with God, the practice of chanting the holy names (especially the Hare Krishna maha-mantra), vegetarianism, ethical living, and selfless service to people of all backgrounds.

Today, ISKCON operates as a vibrant, nonsectarian movement with 1,000 temples, centers, and rural communities across more than 100 countries, including prominent pilgrimage sites such as Sri Mayapur in West Bengal (its spiritual headquarters), Vrindavan, and cities worldwide. It encompasses over 1,000 major centers, thousands of local meeting groups, nearly 100 affiliated vegetarian restaurants, eco-villages, schools, colleges, hospitals, and large-scale free food distribution programs like Food for Life, which serves millions of meals annually to those in need.

Devotees practice bhakti-yoga both in temple worship and daily life, while actively sharing Krishna consciousness through public festivals (such as Rath Yatra chariot processions, chanting of the Lord’s Holy Names), performing arts, educational seminars, book distribution, interfaith dialogues and community outreach.

At its core, ISKCON promotes genuine peace and unity by addressing the imbalance of materialistic values in modern society, as Srila Prabhupada envisioned: fostering loving exchanges among devotees, educating people about the purpose of life through authoritative scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita As It Is and Srimad-Bhagavatam, and encouraging practical applications of devotion for personal and social well-being.

Led by the Governing Body Commission (GBC), the movement remains dedicated to Srila Prabhupada’s teachings as its Founder-Acharya, inspiring millions of congregational members and full-time devotees to live simply, think magnanimously, and contribute to a more compassionate world through spiritual knowledge and service. Whether through temple visits, study groups, or global initiatives, ISKCON continues to offer an accessible path to self-realization and divine love in an increasingly complex age.
